Mark Hoult was born in 1964 in Chichester, West Sussex and has stayed there – more or less – ever since.

After studying Modern History at Oxford University, Mark joined Peat Marwick Mitchell (now known as KPMG) and qualified as a chartered accountant. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

He then worked for a succession of troubled companies in the oil exploration, financial services and software industries, driven by a misguided notion that his efforts were making the world a better place. He was naive enough to hold onto this misconception until well into middle age.

When he was in his forties, Mark finally accepted that he would never play Test cricket for England. This was a shock.

Mark read hardly a word of fiction between the ages of 18 and 40 but eventually he learned how much fun it was to read (and then to write) a good story.

Mark is married and still lives in Chichester, where he enjoys running slowly, playing hockey and spending time with his family.
